The Coupée is a narrow, steeply sloping neck of land that links the main island of Sark to Little Sark in the Channel Islands. Sark is known for its lack of motor cars and its feudal system of land tenure, and visitors crossing the isthmus had to pass along its exposed ridge on foot or horseback. This view was made by the Photochrom process, a Swiss method of color lithography that the Detroit Publishing Company used for its travel views in the 1890s and 1900s. Although the catalog places it under "England," the Channel Islands are Crown dependencies, not part of England itself.
