The Rufus Stone marks the spot in the New Forest where King William II, called Rufus, was traditionally said to have been killed by an arrow in 1100 while hunting. That legend drew visitors to this quiet clearing in southern England, and the monument became a familiar stop for travelers touring the region near Winchester. This view was made by the Detroit Publishing Company using the photochrom process, which built up color from several lithographic stones based on a photograph. The company's catalog of English scenes shows how popular such colored souvenir views were around 1900.
