The pier head at Lowestoft, a North Sea resort town on the Suffolk coast of eastern England, is the subject here. The print is a photochrom, a process that reproduced a photograph in color by printing from several lithographic stones, and it dates from roughly 1890 to 1900. Detroit Publishing Co. listed it in its 1905 catalog of English views, part of a large series that let American buyers see distant places in color. Notice the soft, saturated tones, which were typical of the process and gave such scenes the look of hand-painted pictures.
