Few spots on Ullswater are as quietly picturesque as the landing at Howtown, a small hamlet on the lake's eastern shore where visitors once stepped off passing steamers into the surrounding fells. This print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog, where it is numbered 10490 among its English views. Photochrom was a costly process that built up color from several hand-prepared stone impressions laid over a photograph, and its tinted scenes of lakes and villages were popular souvenirs for travelers and parlors alike.
