Hitterdals Lake lies near Notodden in Telemark, a region of southern Norway known for its lakes, forested hills, and rugged scenery. This view was made with the photochrom process, which started from a black-and-white photograph and then used multiple stone or transfer plates, hand-applied to produce color. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog, which helped build American interest in distant landscapes. Its likely date falls in the late 1890s, when tourism and travel writing were drawing attention to Norway's fjords and lakes.
