Lake Thun, the broad blue lake at the northern edge of the Bernese Oberland, is shown here with the small Aare island that sits near the river's mouth where it enters the lake. The photochrom process used to make this print was a three-stage method that combined photography with hand-prepared lithographic stones, one for each color, which gave the image its soft, painted look. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views to American buyers as souvenirs of European travel, and this example appears in its 1905 catalog of Swiss scenes.
