The Schwarze Lutschine, a glacier-fed stream in the Grindelwald valley, runs below the Wetterhorn, a peak of more than 3,700 meters in the Bernese Oberland. This print is one of the Photochrom views of Switzerland, made by a process developed in Zürich in the 1880s that transferred a photograph into multiple lithographic color stones. The method gave the pictures a soft, painted look and made them popular with travelers and armchair tourists in the 1890s. Its record dates it only to a range of years, but the scene itself would have drawn visitors to the valley and its hotels in that period.
