Few places in the Alps look as much like a postcard as Grindelwald, and this photochrom captures that reputation at the end of the nineteenth century. The view centers on a footbridge spanning the valley floor, with the jagged Bernese Oberland peaks rising behind it. Photochrom was a hand-colored photographic process, developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob, that turned black-and-white negatives into vivid color prints, and it made scenes like this one popular with travelers who wanted souvenirs of Swiss mountain villages. The print is catalogued as number 17087 from the company's Views of Switzerland series, dated roughly between 1890 and 1900.
