The Eiger rising above the village of Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland is the subject here, a pairing that drew travelers to this part of Switzerland long before the mountain's north face became famous. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s that combined photography with hand-retouched lithographic stones. Detroit Publishing Co. sold Swiss views like this one in the United States, and this example appears as print number 1628 in its 1905 catalog.
