Schynige Platte is a mountain viewpoint above Interlaken, and this print frames the Gummihorn with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau rising behind it. The Schynige Platte rack railway, opened in 1893, made such high vantage points reachable for visitors who came to see the Bernese Oberland's famous peaks. The image was produced by the photochrom process, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to lithographic stones and hand-colored in several layers. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views.
