The view centers on the Jungfrau, one of the best-known peaks of the Bernese Alps, seen from the Scheidegg area above the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys. By the 1890s the region drew a growing number of tourists, and the Wengernalp rack railway had reached the Kleine Scheidegg pass in 1893, making the high mountain views far easier to reach. This print is a photochrom, a color process developed and commercially used by the Zurich firm Photoglob, which produced many scenic views of Switzerland for travelers and collectors. Its saturated blues and greens reflect the process's appeal to viewers who wanted the landscape rendered in color.
