Lauterbrunnen's village street runs beneath the Staubbach Waterfall, a plunging cascade of roughly 300 meters that has drawn travelers since the 18th century. Goethe was among the early visitors, and his 1779 poem about the falls helped make the valley a destination. This print was made with the photochrom process, which hand-colored tones onto a photographic base to produce vivid color views for tourists in the 1890s. Its tinted rooftops and meadows reflect the era's appetite for affordable souvenirs of Alpine travel.
