Meiringen sits in the Haslital, where the Aare river runs through a broad valley beneath the peaks of the Bernese Oberland. The town drew travelers as a base for walks to the Reichenbach Falls, which gained wide fame when Arthur Conan Doyle used them for the climax of his 1893 Sherlock Holmes story "The Final Problem." This view was made by the photochrom process, a color printing method developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold such prints in America. Its record dates it to the 1890s, when these color views were popular souvenirs of Swiss travel.
