The pairing of the Jungfrau with the Staubbach Falls is what sets this view apart. The waterfall plunges nearly 300 meters off a cliff above the Lauterbrunnen valley, with the snowy peak of the Jungfrau rising in the Bernese Oberland beyond it. Photochrom prints like this one were made by a process that added color to black-and-white photographs by hand-registered stone lithography. The Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views in America around the turn of the 20th century, and the Staubbach was a favorite subject with travelers, having drawn writers such as Goethe.
