The Jungfrau, one of the great peaks of the Bernese Alps, rises above the Lutschine river in this view, where the valley's glacial meltwater runs down toward the lowlands. Photochrom prints like this one were made by a Swiss process that started from black-and-white photographic negatives and then applied color through a series of hand-prepared stone lithographic plates, giving the scene a painted softness. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold these Swiss views in America as travel souvenirs, and this copy is listed in its 1905 catalog, which helped make Alpine scenery familiar to American viewers.
