Interlaken sits on a narrow strip of land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and this view from the Heimwehfluh, a hill above the town, takes in both the settlement and the snowy peaks of the Bernese Oberland beyond. The Heimwehfluh was a favorite lookout for travelers in the 1890s, when Swiss scenery drew steady numbers of European and American tourists. The print was made by photochrom, a color process developed in Zürich that used a set of lithographic stones, one per color, to reproduce photographs in soft, saturated tones. Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in the United States, and its catalog numbering shows how widely such scenes were marketed as keepsakes.
