Few places in the Alps are as often painted and photographed as the valley around Grindelwald, where a timber chalet sits beneath the steep rock face of the Wetterhorn in the Bernese Oberland. This print is one of the Photochrom views of Switzerland, a commercial color process developed by the Photoglob company in Zurich in the 1890s, when rail travel was bringing growing numbers of tourists to the Alpine villages. The process hand-colored tinted images from black-and-white negatives, giving the scene the soft, painted quality that made such prints popular as souvenirs and wall decorations.
