Photochrom prints like this one were made by the Photoglob company of Zurich, which hand-colored tonal photographs by applying a series of lithographic stones, one per color, to produce vivid images. This example, number 17016 in the series, shows a chalet in the Bernese Oberland, the high Alpine region of southern Switzerland around Interlaken and the Jungfrau massif. Chalet-style architecture, with its wide overhanging eaves and carved wooden balconies, became a symbol of Swiss mountain life and drew tourists to the area during the 1890s. The record dates the print only to a span of about a decade, but its saturated palette captures how these souvenir views were marketed to travelers.
