Frutigen, a village in the Kander valley of the Bernese Oberland, sits below the Balmhorn, a peak of roughly 3,700 meters in the Bernese Alps, and this view pairs the settlement with the mountain. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland in the 1890s, transferred a photograph onto multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, which produced the soft, saturated greens and blues seen here. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such Swiss views to American buyers, and this one is listed as print number 9241 in its 1905 catalog.
