Guttannen lies in the Hasli valley above Meiringen, and this view follows the road climbing toward the Grimsel Pass, which linked the Bernese Oberland with the Valais. The photochrom process behind it, developed in Zurich in the 1880s, combined a photograph with several lithographic stones to produce saturated color. The Detroit Publishing Company issued this view in its 1905 catalog of Swiss scenes, reflecting the turn-of-the-century appetite for mountain landscapes.
