Grindelwald, the alpine village in the Bernese Oberland, sits at the foot of the Wetterhorn, and this photochrom captures that pairing of settlement and peak. Photochrom was a color process developed in Zurich by the Photoglob company, which hand-colored stone lithographs made from photographs, producing vivid postcard-style views that were popular with tourists in the 1890s. Prints like this one, numbered in the company's series of Swiss views, were sold to travelers who wanted a souvenir of the Alpine landscape. Look closely at the meadows and the snowline on the Wetterhorn to see the soft, layered color that the process was known for.
