The Grindelwald grotto was a cave in the Bernese Oberland, in a valley that drew tourists in the late 1800s for views of the Eiger and Wetterhorn. This print comes from the photochrom process, which was developed in Switzerland and printed color from a series of stone plates, giving it the soft, painted look seen here. Detroit Publishing Co. sold photochrom views of Switzerland and other places in the United States, and this one is numbered 1630 in its 1905 catalog. Made between about 1890 and 1900, it shows how travelers were already visiting the valley's natural sights.
