Lake Sils lies in the Upper Engadine, a high Alpine valley in the canton of Grisons, where a chain of lakes sits between steep mountain slopes. The view was made as a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s that printed photographic images from several lithographic stones, each inked in a different color. Detroit Publishing Co. included this print in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views, which reflects how strongly American buyers and travelers of the period were drawn to Alpine scenery.
