Klöntalersee is a mountain lake in the Klöntal valley of the canton of Glarus, in eastern Switzerland, and this print shows it in the pale greens and blues typical of the photochrom process. Photochrom images began as black-and-white photographs, which were then reproduced through a series of lithographic stones, each inked in a different color and hand-retouched before printing. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American travelers and households in the early 1900s, and this example is listed in its 1905 catalog of Swiss scenes. Its date falls within the 1890s, when the process was at its most popular for landscape views.
