Silvaplana sits beside its lake in the Upper Engadine, a high valley in the canton of Grisons in southeastern Switzerland. This view, number 1886 in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of Swiss views, was made by the photochrom process, which built a color image from several lithographic stones, one for each hue. The original photochroms were produced in Zurich in the 1890s, and Detroit sold American versions as travel souvenirs. The print is dated between about 1890 and 1900.
