Tomlishorn, a rocky outlook on Mount Pilatus above Lake Lucerne, is the focus of this view, which is part of a series of Swiss scenes. Pilatus had become a popular destination by the 1890s, after a cogwheel railway opened to its summit in 1889, and visitors came for the lake and Alpine panoramas. The image was made with the photochrom process, which printed color from several lithographic stones over a photographic base. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views.
