From a lookout on the Stanserhorn, above the town of Stans, this print turns toward Mount Titlis, the glaciated peak that rises over the Engelberg valley in the Unterwalden region of central Switzerland. The view belongs to the photochrom series, in which a black-and-white photographic negative was transferred to lithographic stones and then colored by hand, so the greens of the meadows and the blues of the snow come from the printing craft rather than the camera. Photochrom views like this one were sold to travelers in the 1890s, when rail and cable links were opening alpine scenery to tourists, and the image reflects that era's appetite for dramatic mountain panoramas.
