The Jochpass, a mountain crossing in the Unterwalden country, is shown here with the Wetterhorn, the limestone peak that rises above the Bernese Oberland. The pass was a route for walkers and muleteers traveling between the Engelberg valley and the Hasli region long before tourism reached the area in numbers. This print was made by the photochrom process, a Zurich method that built up color from several stone plates, and it appears in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of Swiss views. The tinted layers give the snow, meadows, and rock a softer, painterly look than a plain black-and-white photograph.
