Engstlenalp, a high alpine pasture reached by mountain paths above the Engelberg valley, appears here in a near view that puts the grazing meadows and surrounding slopes in sharp focus. The print was made by the photochrom process, in which the Zurich firm Orell Füssli produced black-and-white negatives and then printed successive color stones by hand to build up the tints. The Detroit Publishing Company held American rights to the process and sold these Swiss views through its own catalog, and this example bears the number 8340 from its 1905 listing.
