Teufelsbrücke, or Devil's Bridge, spans the Reuss River in the Schöllenen Gorge on the old route over the Saint Gotthard Pass. Local legend says the devil built it in exchange for the first soul to cross, and the narrow span has long drawn travelers and artists to this rugged stretch of the Alps. This print is one of the photochrom views of Switzerland, a color process developed by the Photoglob company in Zurich in the 1890s. Each image was built from several stone lithographs, so the bright tones were applied by hand-registered layers rather than photographed in color.
