The Château de Werra stands in the Valais, the Swiss canton that follows the upper Rhône valley, and this view presents it as a picturesque fortified residence. The Photochrom process, developed by the Zürich firm Photoglob in the late 1880s, produced color images by printing a photographic negative from several lithographic stones, each hand-tinted before the final impression. Publishers sold these views to tourists and armchair travelers, so the print also shows how Swiss landmarks were packaged for visitors around 1900.
