Sion, the capital of the canton of Valais in the Rhône valley, is the subject here, shown in a general panoramic view taken from a height above the town. Photochrom prints like this one were made by the Photoglob company of Zurich, which used a lithographic process to add color to photographs, and the firm became known for its tinted views of Swiss towns and mountains in the 1890s. The date range on the record, roughly the 1890s, places the print in the years when tourism in the Alps was expanding quickly with the arrival of railways and hotels. Look closely at the rooftops and church towers, which give a sense of the town's compact medieval layout beneath its hillside castles.
