Zmutt Valley opens below the north face of the Matterhorn, and this print turns from there toward the Mischabelhörner, the group of high peaks that rises across the Mattertal from Zermatt. The photochrom process used for these views, developed in Zürich in the 1880s, transferred a black-and-white photograph onto stone or metal plates and printed it in several colors, giving the scene a painted softness. Such prints were sold to travelers and armchair visitors in the 1890s, when the Swiss Alps were becoming a major destination for mountaineers and tourists.
