The Simplon Pass in the Valais Alps carried one of the main routes between Switzerland and Italy, and this view records a village in its shadow. The road over the pass was built under Napoleon's direction in the early 1800s and linked the Rhône valley with the Italian side. The photochrom process used here, developed in Zürich in the late 1880s, printed several colored stones over a photographic base to give the scene a painted softness. Detroit Publishing Company issued this view in its 1905 catalog of Swiss scenes.
