Leysin sits on a sunny terrace in the Alps above the Rhône valley, and this view shows the village with its hotels spread across the slope. In the decades around 1900, Leysin was becoming known as a high-altitude resort, and its clean air drew visitors seeking health cures. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that turned a black-and-white photograph into a color image using several lithographic stones, each inked by hand. Detroit Publishing Company later sold these views in the United States, which helped spread these pictures of Swiss scenery widely.
