Carved into a sandstone cliff in Lucerne, the Lion Monument honors the Swiss Guards who died defending the Tuileries Palace in Paris on 10 August 1792, during the French Revolution. The sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen designed the dying lion, which was completed in 1821. This photochrom print, one of the color views of Switzerland issued in the 1890s, shows the monument as many travelers of that period would have seen it. Mark Twain later called it the saddest and most moving piece of stone he had ever seen.
