The title pairs Lugano with Oria, both in the Italian-speaking Ticino canton, which the German-language catalog calls Tessin. Lake Lugano's shoreline and its mild climate made the area a favorite with nineteenth-century travelers, who came for its Mediterranean feel within the Alpine country. The print is a photochrom, a process developed by the Photoglob company in Zurich that turned black-and-white glass negatives into color images using several hand-prepared stone plates. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold the Swiss views in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of Switzerland scenes. Its date range places it in the decade when the process was at its most popular.
