Lugano's lakefront and the peak of Monte San Salvatore rising behind it are the focus of this view of the Ticino town on Lake Lugano, in Switzerland's Italian-speaking south. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zürich in the 1880s that combined photography with hand-retouched stone lithography, and it was sold in America by the Detroit Publishing Co. Such views were popular with tourists and armchair travelers in the 1890s and early 1900s, when rail and steamer routes were bringing visitors to Alpine lakes in growing numbers. The catalog listing places the print in the company's 1905 Switzerland series.
