Lugano's lakefront quay on the Ticino side of Switzerland is the subject here, a waterfront that drew travelers coming south over the Alps into Italian-speaking country. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Zurich in the 1880s by the Orell Füssli firm that hand-applied color stone by stone, and this example was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which bought up Swiss photochrom rights and sold views like it through its catalog. Its record places it between about 1890 and 1900, when the process was at its most popular among tourists and collectors who wanted colorful souvenirs of places they had visited.
