Lugano's lakefront quay on Lake Lugano, in the Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton of southern Switzerland, is the subject of this view. The picture was made by the photochrom process, an early method that printed photographs in color from several lithographic stones, with the tints applied by hand. The Detroit Publishing Company later issued it in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views as print number 6759. Lakeside scenes like this one were popular with American travelers and armchair tourists of the period, who prized the color as a novelty. The record dates the original image to between about 1890 and 1900.
