The road from Lugano runs out over the water toward Melide here, carried across the lake on a causeway and bridge that link the two shores. The photochrom process behind the print was developed in Zurich in the 1880s and combined a photographic negative with several lithographic stones to add color by hand-registered layers. Detroit Publishing Co. issued this view in its 1905 catalog of Swiss scenes, which found a ready market among American travelers and armchair tourists.
