The title places this view at San Mamette, near Lugano in the Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton in southern Switzerland, where the lake and hillside villages drew travelers in the late nineteenth century. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that built up an image from several lithographic stones, each inked in a different color. The Detroit Publishing Company, which marketed these Swiss views in the United States, issued this example in its 1905 catalog of Switzerland scenes. The record dates the original photograph to roughly the 1890s, so the image shows the region as tourists of that decade would have seen it.
