Lugano's Monte San Salvatore, the steep peak that rises straight above the lake, is the subject here, and the view is taken from the water or lakeshore looking up at its slopes and the town spread along the edge of Lake Lugano in the Swiss canton of Ticino. This is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob Co. of Zurich in the 1880s, which printed hand-colored tones from a set of photographic stone plates. Photochroms of this kind were popular travel souvenirs in the 1890s, and this one is numbered 1233 within the company's Swiss views, a series that helped define how tourists pictured the country.
