The picture shows a viaduct near Gryon, a village in the canton of Vaud, set against the Alpine landscape of western Switzerland. The record dates it to the 1890s, a period when Swiss scenery and railway engineering drew many European and American travelers. It is a photochrom, a process developed in Zürich that used photographic negatives and multiple hand-applied color stones to produce vivid prints. Detroit Publishing Co. later sold these views in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of Swiss scenes.
