Laufenburg is a pair of towns that face each other across the upper Rhine, with Gross Laufenburg on the German bank and Klein Laufenburg on the Swiss side in Aargau. The name itself refers to the rapids that once made this stretch of the river hard to navigate. This photochrom print was made by the Detroit Publishing Co., which sold color views of Switzerland and other European places to American buyers in the years around 1900. The process combined a black-and-white photographic negative with hand-applied color stone printing, so the colors reflect the printer's judgment as much as the scene itself.
