Celerina, a village in the upper Engadine valley of eastern Switzerland, is the subject here, and its small church of St. Gian is what sets this view apart. The caption places the village in Aargau, but Celerina lies in Graubünden, a discrepancy worth noting for researchers. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed in Zürich in the 1880s that combined a photograph with color applied from several lithographic stones. This copy was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views.
