Few pictures on this board show a private estate, and this one turns to the Château de la Soie near Savièse, a village in the canton of Valais above the Rhône valley. The print is a photochrom, made by the Zurich firm Photoglob in the 1890s, when travelers bought these hand-colored views as souvenirs of Swiss scenery. The process combined photographs with color stones prepared by hand, so the greens of the vineyards and the warm tones of the buildings reflect the artists' choices as much as the camera's record.
