A snow gallery, the covered stretch of road that shields travelers from avalanches, sets this winter view apart from the other alpine scenes in the set. Napoleon's engineers built the Simplon road in the early 1800s, opening it in 1805 to link the Rhone valley at Brig with Italy, and galleries like this one were added along its high slopes to keep the route open in winter. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s that combined photography with hand-worked color from several stone plates. Detroit Publishing Company, which marketed these images in the United States, issued it in its 1905 catalog as number 6623.
