This general view of Buchrain, near Solothurn in Switzerland, presents a broad scene of the town rather than a single landmark. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Zürich in the late 1880s that transferred a black-and-white photograph onto lithographic stones, with each color applied separately. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these Swiss scenes in America, and this example is number 1485 in its 1905 catalog. Dating from about the 1890s, it shows how travel views were produced for a wide market before halftone printing replaced the process.
