The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen, shown here under moonlight, were among the most visited sights in Switzerland, and the view turns the broad white cascade into a soft, silvery mass against dark rock. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that transferred photographs to stone and added color by hand, giving the print a painted look. The Detroit Publishing Company acquired rights to the process and sold such views in the United States, many of them as souvenirs of European travel. Its catalog of Swiss scenes, from which this print comes, reflects the late nineteenth-century appetite for landscapes that looked like paintings.
